Johnny Foodstamp sits down to talk about life, the universe, and everything.
Interviewed by Jake Compton
JOHNNY FOODSTAMP - resides in the seedy underbelly of East Nashville. His music has been referred to as everything from Ship-Hop (rap music for pirates) to Olde Tyme Music from the Future. The last surviving member of his former band, The Late Great Wildcard Family Revival, has since dug up a bunch of B material for his solo project. His solo album, tentatively entitled "Never Sing Falsetto Before Noon and Always Tip your Waitress" is due out as soon as he sells his motorcycle.
I had the opportunity to speak with Johnny over the phone. Here is how it went.
JC - So your music is amazing. Are you a time traveling hobo or something?
Foodstamp - "No."
JC - The only reason I ask is because your music reminds me of something a train hobo would play to lull you to sleep right before he tried to rape you.
Foodstamp - "That's exactly what I was going for. You know, it's time-less music played in an untimely fashion."
JC - So what is your favorite color?
Foodstamp - "If I'm honest with myself? I'm gonna have to say pink. That's off the record though."
JC - If I close my eyes and listen to your record, what should I see?
Foodstamp - "Well, I would imagine you'd see a piano. Now granted I don't play the piano or anything, but it'd be there, kinda like an old saloon style piano. And sitting at the piano is the fattest monkey you've ever seen. And he's just sittin' there, smoking on a huge cigar and playing the shit out of that piano. Somewhere in the background you'll hear lots of glasses full of cheap beer clinkin' around."
At this point the telephone interview was abruptly cut short. On the other end of the line I could hear loud shouting about the logistics of making a pizza-sized pizza bagel. Then the line went dead.
